Weekly Fun :) Letter from May 18, 2015

Hello Family! :)
Monday- I got my "pre-trunk's" in the mail! Crazzzzy. That's a bright yellow paper that you fill out, and submit to the mission office, so that they can get your flight information. It was...surreal. Just weird. Our zone had a barbecue as well! That was really fun to be a part of. We played volleyball and kickball. Good times.

Tuesday- Horseshoe Bend is still Horseshoe Bend. We're not teaching anyone there yet. We did talk to a guy named Floyd though. And he seemed pretty interested in talking to us about the gospel. We'll go back and talk to him tomorrow. It was pretty rainy this week, and at about8:45 a LOUD siren went off in Horseshoe Bend... It sounded like a tornado siren (in fact, I think it was). Both Sister Colby and I were pretty freaked out by the whole situation, so we headed home through the POURING rain... apparently it was an "Intense Storm" siren.

Wednesday- Oh, Garden Valley. We're still working on finding people to teach there as well.We also met a woman named Brandi that was a former investigator. She invited us to come back and teach her. So hopefully that will start soon!
Thursday- We spent Thursday in Sweet. We were set to have a lesson with a new investigator, Chris, but when we got to his house he wasn't home... and wouldn't be home until the next day. We were pretty upset about that. But then we decided to go and visit another investigator, Tristan. We taught him about the Restoration- and he asked a TON of questions. Questions about the priesthood, temples, prayer, who God is, etc. He was so genuine in his asking. We're still waiting for him to really get on his knees and pray to know if everything is true. And he knows that he needs to as well.

Friday- Craziest day of my mission. Life or death. Ha! I'm totally kidding. It wasn't that bad. But kinda. ;) We had our district meeting that morning, and then we all got together for a district service project. We were helping a man named Tracy to load drift wood into the back of his truck- to which he led us to the top of a HUGE hill to do so. It had been raining the entire day, and the ground was insanely muddy. Tracy pointed us in the direction to drive down the mountain, so all three of our jeeps started in a line. But as we traveled, we found that this was going to be more treacherous than we thought. We were on a narrow road: a cliff on one side and a river on the other. So there wasn't much wiggle room. As we drove, the jeeps began to slide from side to side- almost going into the river! We jumped out of the cars and started to push them back onto the road. We stopped the cars and everyone got out to assess the situation. The mud was literally up to our ankles. We spent a good 20-30 minutes discussing the pro's and con's of turning around and going down the huge hill that we had climbed, going forward towards an unknown path, calling someone, just doing it ourselves, etc. After saying a prayer and asking for protection, we continuedslowly forward.... It took us about an hour to get out of the mud. It was insane. And our cars were trashed after that... but nothing bad happened. What a miracle. And I caught the whole experience on camera. ;) So, it wasn't that bad. Ha!

Saturday and Sunday- We spent our time in Emmett. April and Tom are still working on preparing for baptism. They'll get there soon! They're working on quitting smoking- they've come a long way! Now it's just the waiting game, trying to be patient. Shawn and Casey are another couple that we're working with. They've been taking the lessons and they're progressing well. They're in the process of getting married and praying to receive that witness that everything is true. Hopefully they can recognize their answers soon. We've really been praying for them. We're trying to find new investigators there in Butte as well. We're doing a lot of work.

15 MONTHS! Letter from May 11, 2015

HEYYYY! I just have to say, skyping home on Sunday was the BEST thing ever.

We taught a total of 26 lessons this week. #bestweekever #newrecord

We've really been working hard and going non-stop. It's insane- but completely amazing. I love doing the Lord's work. I love feeling exhausted at the end of the day because I was using all of my energy to help God's children. Best feeling ever.

I can't believe that I've reached 15 months. It's really a weird feeling. Now other missionaries are coming up to me and saying, "Sister Gubler, you've been out a while. Can you give me some advice?" And I just keep thinking, "I'm still a greenie! Why are you asking me?!" I'm really starting to get annoyed with people saying, "Oh! You're going home soon!" I've started with coming back with, "Oh, no, I'll be a missionary forever. Every member a missionary!"

Oh gosh... I really don't know how to describe this week. So this will have to do for now! haha Sorry! Questions are always appreciate to help this old mind know what to talk about ;)

Letter from May 4, 2015

Tuesday: Exchanges to Ontario! I was with Sister Orr (a Sister that I was in the MTC with, but now she's my STL) and it was a total blast. It's been amazing to see how much we've both changed since coming on our missions. We laughed and joked about the MTC and funny experiences we've had since then.

Wednesday: Garden Valley Branch. It's truly an interesting place- seriously. People go there to "get lost"... That's pretty self explanatory right there. But we've been working with Steve some more. We tried to commit him to baptism but he said no. Well, he said that if he were to be baptized then he would be LDS... but he has so many friends in difference faiths that he doesn't want to offend them by "choosing a side". We're still working with him. Our time in Garden Valley was mostly spent trying to contact potential and former investigators and see if they were interested in taking the lessons. It's always hard when you have to drop people... but you just do what you have to do. A funny thing that happened though: We were trying to find a young couple that just moved in to the branch, but no one knew their address. (We found out later that they don't even live there, but that's beside the point. haha)  So we were going door to door and asking people, "Hi! How are ya? Do you know where Jason and Lisa live?" And they would respond that they didn't but that they'd help us find them. "Let's go ask Joe across the street!" hahahaha! Eventually, we had a TON of people walking with us through the streets to find Jason and Lisa... hahahaha! Funniest moment ever. The best part is, they're all old people. So it was just hilarious!

The town of Ola- outside of Sweet.

Thursday: Sweet Ward. For the FIRST TIME EVER since being in this area, we actually had things to do that day! haha! We contacted a lot of former and potential investigators and invited them to learn about the gospel. And we also had a lesson with one of our investigators! Tristan! He's YSA aged, but the Elders that cover the YSA ward don't have the miles to get all the way out here. So we've been teaching him. We were able to teach him about the plan of salvation- and he asked a TON of questions. That's one thing that I love about the YSA age group- they ask a MILLION questions. And they're genuine. They really want to know the truth and how it applies to them.

Friday and Saturday: Butte Ward. Our days in Butte Ward are pretty much the same. We visit April and Tom- and they are still amazing. I can't wait until they're baptized! They're so prepared! And we also visit with Shawn and Casey :) We taught them about the plan of salvation- to which they readily accepted everything. Oh my goodness. They are so awesome! I'm so excited for all of them!

Sunday: Garden Valley Branch. What an interesting day... we went to church at the branch and then went to visit a less active woman named Erica. We showed up and she had PILES of food and clothes!! Oh my goodness... She had gone to the store after church and bought bags of chimichanga's, corn dogs, chicken, burrito's AND iced tea... Yeahhhh... and then she expected us to eat ALL OF IT while we were there. It was interesting. And then she wanted us to teach her the discussions, so we started getting into a lesson and she was just- AWESOME. She genuinely wanted to know the truth and improve in her gospel knowledge. So we forgave her for trying to give us iced tea ;) haha! But then she gave us literally all of the dresses from her closet and told us to give them to other missionaries. whoaaaaa. And there was also a baptism that my companion was involved in and I ran into an old friend from KUNA!!! :D Good times. :)

Tomorrow is my 15 month mark....... insane.

23 Lessons! Letter from April 27, 2015

We did really well this week with our contacts and lessons taught. It's the new record for this area. :) I like setting records. :)

Before I tell you about some of the people that we're working with, I have a little side note. :) On Wednesday we drove up to Garden Valley. As we were driving on the highway, we saw a pull off on the side of the road and a little trail that led to a distant waterfall. We thought, "Wow! How fun! Let's take a little hike!" Well... first of all, the hike proved to be more difficult that we first thought because #1. we had only our skirts and flats and #2. it was SUPER steep. But we continued nonetheless. As we were hiking, I didn't want to go any further but my companion urged me to keep going- so I did. And then..... we passed some underwear on the side of the trail...... GROSS. I told her again that I wanted to turn around, but we kept going a little further until the trail turned more difficult. So we went back. On the way back, we talked to this guy that was walking up the trail. He asked us if we went up to the springs and we said no... and there was more awkward conversation after that point. haha! But when we got back to our car we saw the sign for the trail said, "SKINNY DIPPING HOT SPRINGS". O.O Oh gosh.... Good thing we didn't go all the way! Probably why I felt we should turn around... hahahahahaa ANYWAYS. That was the awkward moment of the week. :P

April and Tom: Amazing couple! They just got married in order to be baptized! We just set a new baptismal date with them for June 6th and we plan on meeting with them weekly for lessons. They're totally just unbaptized Mormons. :)

Shawn and Casey: They were some former investigators. But the missionaries had given up on them because... honestly, I don't know. We taught them the restoration and they committed to being baptized! The next 3 lessons we had with them were centered on "what do I have to do to be baptized?". It was great. We talked about the word of wisdom and the law of chastity- they committed to get married. Yeah! Super exciting! And THEN, to my companions complete disbelief, they came to church on Sunday!! Yes!

Nelda: A less active woman. We normally visit her every Monday night for a Family Home Evening but, oh bless her heart, she falls asleep EVERY TIME WE GO OVER! hahahaha. But she called us up crying this week and asked us if we could come over. She told us that she feels like she's losing her testimony. She has so many questions and not a lot of answers and her gospel knowledge is limited. She asked us if we could teach her the lessons. So we'll be going over there to do that with her.

Tim:  He, like a lot of other investigators, has had all of the lessons. We have a lesson with him this week and we hope to help him to remember the testimony that he has.

Steve: A super old man... He's had the lessons a million times, but I don't think that he was ever committed to be baptized! What's with that?! We set up weekly lessons with him so that we can teach him. We're going to commit him to a baptismal date this week. It's totally happening.

I'm LOVING my mission. It's a blast so far! I can't believe I only have.... I'm not even going to say it!

Ohhh, the drive thru's in Emmett... "Hi! I'd like a small chocolate milkshake!"

Picture Journey! Letter from April 20, 2015

Mommy!
This new area is pretty insane. I haven't been this tired since the beginning of my mission! Whew... so exhausted. We cover a ward in Emmett, a ward in Sweet, a branch in Horseshoe Bend, and a branch in Garden Valley. Here, let me take you through our day to day...
Monday- Preparation day in Emmett.
Tuesday- In the morning, we wake up at our house in Emmett, get ready and study, and then we drive 30 minutes to Horseshoe Bend. We work there during the day, and then we go to bed at a different member's house.
Wednesday- Same routine in the morning. Then we drive 45 more minutes to Garden Valley! We work there for the day, and then we spend the night. We live with a different member every night we go there.
Thursday- Same routine... and then we drive an hour and work in Sweet! We work there during the day and then that night we drive back to Emmett and sleep.
Friday- District meeting in Emmett and then we work in Emmett all day.
Saturday- Still in Emmett.
Sunday- We'll be rotating each Sunday. This last Sunday we went to church in Sweet and then worked in Sweet, next week will be Horseshoe Bend. Then we drive back to Emmett to go to bed.
So, yeah. Lots of driving. And our days are PACKED. There's absolutely NO down time- which is partly nice, because I LOVE working! But I'm just so tired... I wake up as tired as I was when I fell asleep. Grrrr.
Garden Valley and Horseshoe Bend just had Elder's covering that area and... to be honest... the Elder's did absolutely nothing. Just bein' honest. So there's nothing going on in the ward, so we have a LOT to catch up on.
We're not really teaching too many people in these areas.
I didn't realize how much of a "go, go, go" kind of missionary I was until this area. I just have such a big desire to work! And work HARD! The Lord can't do His work until we're out there doing it because we are His hands. It's hit me how little time I have left and I just want to work until I dieeee.

Sister Gubler

Okayyyy... Let me take you on a little journey. :D

Here in Idaho, people like to give us CRAZY directions. We were on our way from our house in Horseshoe Bend to our house in Garden Valley and this is what direction we were given over the phone!
Sister Colby proceeded to draw a map as the direction were given. Isn't it beautiful?!
We were told to go down the highway until we reach mile marker 78.... (Whoa! There it is!)

After we found mile marker 78, we would go just a little bit further until we reached the bridge where the 2 rivers cross!
FOUND IT!

Take that bridge and then turn right onto Banks Lowman Highway.... (Wow! Look at that view!)

We decided to stop along the highway and take some pictures :)

Drive until you reach the 8 mile marker... and then you'll come to a bridge!!

Turn left onto Middle Fork Road and continue down until you see an old red barn with a silver roof and an old white/gray house.

They lived on an Elk Ranch! Look for the sign with an old bridge... then cross the bridge....

The end of the bridge will have a HUGE iron elk... That's them! keep going!
Is THIS the house?? We thought we'd knock and see.....

Nope... But we found it!!!

Our prize when we got to the end??

ELK JERKY AND 2 DOLLARS!!!! (The people we stayed with gave us each a dollar because I guessed when he graduated from BYU.... haha! 1964! They told me that I should take up gambling ;) )

My first letter while in Emmett!!! Came on Saturday. Day made!

TRANSFER! Letter from April 13, 2015

Transfer day! Dang.... My entire day has been spent sitting in a van!

Yep. I left La Grande. I'm so upset about it. I wasn't ready to leave! There was so much happening- so much left to be done! BAH! But I know that the Lord is in charge and He'll send me where I need to go.

MY watch died... my faithful watch...

And we got a FANCY lunch on my last Saturday in La Grande.

I'm back in Idaho- in Emmett! We're covering Emmett, Butte, Sweet, Horseshoe Bend, and Garden Valley. Craziness. It's weird to be back in Idaho... You mean I have to pump my own gas?! And there's tax here?! What is this place?! And... guess what... I'm not the designated driver.... BLASPHEMY! I have to sit in the passenger seat?! BAH. hahahaha What a life I lead!

My new companion is Sister Colby. She's from Ft. Worth, Texas and has been out for about 10 months.

She seems like a hard worker- which she'd better be! haha! Work, work, work! That's what I'm talkin' about! We'll be shotgunning Horseshoe Bend and Garden Valley (meaning that there were Elders there before and now we're both new coming in), so that'll be exciting. We cover 2 wards and 2 branches. Hopefully we'll be able to get some work going in this area. Apparently this area has about 3 different houses that we stay in during the week... sooo... just send the mail to the mission office! haha!

This district is pretty tightly knit... and I'm so used to my little district in La Grande... Just the 2 companionships. So this will take a little getting used to. I'm used to being anti-social nowadays.

Anywaysssss... I don't have much time. I'm sorry! I'll write more next week!

14 Months Already?! Letter from April 6, 2015

I was a little sick this week which made it kind of hard for me to focus this week. But the Lord blessed us for still being diligent! 20 lessons this week! OH! And I hit my 14 month mark! CRAZYYYY.

Tiffany- we taught her the plan of salvation with a member of the ward. Tiffany has a Baptist background and she told us that she's really just taking the lessons for informational purposes. She has a hard time accepting anything that she didn't grow up learning (pre-mortal life, post-mortal life), even though she does agree that it makes sense to her. Her only comment is always: "It's not familiar to me- It's not what I learned growing up. I'll have to pray about it." So, hopefully she does.

Seanna- A less active. I may have talked about her before. But we've started teaching her the lessons. We taught her about the plan of salvation and really focused on the Atonement. She has a lot of baggage in her life that she's trying to get rid of. We talked about forgiveness (of ourselves and others). She's really making a move to come back to church.

Ashley- If you remember, she's the one that is less active, husband isn't a member, and her younger brother is serving a mission. We've had some amazing lessons with her so far! We've taught her the restoration, and just this week we taught her the plan of salvation as well. Our conversation ranged from reading Alma 32, talking about faith and prayer, all the way to helping her see why she would want to live in the Celestial kingdom. She is doing awesome with the gospel. :) We're hoping to be able to get her to church!

Katie- Katie is related to some members of the Elgin Ward, but she lives in La Grande. We helped her move apartments the other day and got talking to her about the church. We learned that she's a less active member and that she had no intention of coming back to church.... Well, by the time we left, she agreed to have us come over and visit her! After our first visit, we just helped her to unpack her things and set another appointment. But the next time we came over we had a lesson with Stephanie (her sister) and Derek... and at the end of that lesson she asked us to come over and have a "review lesson" with her! :) She wants God in her life again. :)

Kendra- She's one of those eternal investigators, as of right now. She feels like she has to know everything before she gets baptized. Right now she's dealing with a husband  who is dealing with an addiction and is completely unrepentant... So they've just gotten a divorce. She came to us this week looking for guidance. So often in the church they talk about the family, and she feels like she doesn't "fit the mold" and is having a hard time finding peace. We directed her to watch the General Women's Meeting from conference. Hopefully that will help her.

Stephanie and Derek- They are absolutely golden. They want to be baptized, but didn't understand why they had to be married. So we taught them about the law of chastity- which the readily accepted. And since then we've taught them the restoration and the plan of salvation. They are wonderful people! They told us yesterday that they're now engaged to be married and hope to do it as soon as possible! AND they want us to be the witnesses. I feel honored. Haha!

Jody and Damon- The two teenage boys that are taking the lessons. They both have learning disabilities, so teaching them has been difficult. Jody committed to living the word of wisdom! Damon just rolled his eyes and said that he liked his tea too much. Hahaha. Ohhh, teenage boys.

Bush- We taught him about the priesthood this week. It was great because we brought his young men's leader and a couple of other boys his age as well. They were able to bear testimony and share experiences that we, as Sisters, couldn't! It was awesome. They really got him excited about the priesthood and he committed to talking with the Bishop about receiving it.

"One More House"- I always find that if I keep this in mind when I'm tired that the Lord blesses us. I'm always feeling like I'm at the end of my rope and that I want to give up. But as I keep saying, "one more house" I find that that "last" house is someone who is prepared for the gospel! :) Heavenly Father knows His children.

A cool pen from a sister in the ward!
